Sensei NJ (Jay) Hubert is the instructor and founder of Close Quarter Martial Arts Club (CQMAC) in association Snow Tiger Martial Arts, Kia Shin Karate Association, Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Council, and with SOS Lighthouse in order to offor a martial arts program for the Oak Lake area. He started training in martial arts specifically in Chito-Ryu Karate and Canadian Jiu-Jitsu in 1992 with Snow Tiger Martial Arts at the 8 Wing Trenton Martial Arts Club (then known as CFB Trenton). There were a few reasons why he joined the martial arts and got involved in these art forms some due to events during his childhood other reasons were due to the fact his parents could not afford the usual sports fees like hockey, baseball, or football. In 1998 he became a first degree black belt in both art forms and has been teaching ever since both children and adults alike.
Sensei Hubert currently holds a rank of second degree in both Karate and Jiu-Jiujitsu. Over the years he has worked on developing his martial arts skills by adding other concept/styles to the foundation base of Karate and Jiu-Jitsu. In the fall/winter of 2009 he began teaching in the Brandon area at the East End Community Centre and then later in the Oak Lake area with Prairie West Recreations with a women's self defence course. Shortly after that he began classes with SOS Lighthouse Programs. During a typical class with Sensei Hubert students work hard on basics and fundamentals or martial arts. They have fun with learning new techniques and focusing on life skills, situational awareness, street proofing, and bully proofing. Building confidence, strength, curtsy, respect for others, discipline of self, and self control.
Sensei's classes are non competition orientated as his skill set deals with dealing with outside the ring type situations and focuses on protection of self and others.
Sensei Hubert currently works for the Department of National Defence (DND) and has been involved in teaching the military and law enforcement martial arts skills.
